OUR HISTORY

THE HISTORY OF SURF LIFE SAVING IN NSW: The origins of Surf Life Saving New South Wales, and indeed Australia, can be traced back to the actions of Mr William Gocher at Manly Beach in September 1902, defying the law of the time by bathing during the prohibited hours.

As surf bathing grew in popularity, its dangers just as rapidly became apparent. Small groups of experienced and regular surfers began to form themselves into lifesaving bodies to assist those who required to be rescued from an unfamiliar environment.

As these clubs grew in size and numbers, the need for a united front to raise funds and seek assistance from local and state government resulted in the New South Wales Surf Bathing Association being formed on 18 October 1907.

THE HISTORY OF CROWDY HEAD SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB: While there are records (Manning River Times Wednesday 13 December 1933) indicating a committee for the Crowdy Head Surf Club was formed possibly that year when between 30 and 40 locals attended a meeting, Crowdy Head’s first clubhouse was purchased for £200 ($400) by Tom Crossingham and relocated from Ross Glen to Crowdy Head in 1958.

It is reported by the Manning River Times (via Trove) that the inaugural meeting was held and office bearers elected, as follows:

A meeting was called for the purpose of forming a surf club at Crowdy Head on Wednesday last at Mr  A Wards hall, Coralville. It was decided to form a club and the following office bearers were elected:

President: Mr Garside

Vice President: Messrs A Ward; F Heath; A I Weber: J Radley and C M Lambert.

Organiser: Mr E Hogan

Captain: Mr W Walker

Vice Captain: Mr A E Staples

Secretary/Treasurer: Mr L Greenal

Instructor: Mr W Walker

Committee: Messrs R Manning and H Staples together with 5 vice presidents

Boat Captain: Mr F Burns

Vice Captain: Mr H Staples

Beach Inspectors: Messrs O Allan and J Bennett
