FAQ
When does the surf club season run?
When is the beach patrolled?
Volunteer lifeguards patrol weekends and public holidays only from the start of the September school holidays through until around ANZAC Day (25th April). The times the beach is patrolled by our volunteers varies depending on the number of visitors, weather conditions and the time of year, with longer patrol hours over the busier December/January holiday period.
Council Lifeguards patrol Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) during the busier Christmas (December/January) school holidays.
The beach is unpatrolled during the cooler winter months, from around the ANZAC weekend through to the commencement of the September school holidays.

What is the nippers program?
The Surf Life Saving Nipper Program is a great activity aimed at increasing surf safety by growing a child’s confidence, knowledge and skills in the beach environment. Children have fun and meet new friends, and become part of an iconic organisation that has served the Australian community for over 100 years.
When does nippers run?
Generally, our nipper program commences at the beginning of Term 4 each year (around the end of September/beginning of October) and concludes at the end of Term 1 (around the end of March/beginning of April), during the warmer months.
How old does my child need to be to join nippers?
It is a SLSNSW requirement that children must have turned 5 years of age by 30th September to be able to join the nippers program.
How do I work out what age group my Nipper will be in?
Children can commence nippers if they have turned 5 years old by 30 September. The age group in which a child will participate on club days or compete at carnivals is calculated as at midnight on the 30th September. For example, if a child’s age at the 30th September is 12 years, then the child will be in the U13 age group, while a child who turns 12 after the 30th September will be in the U12 age group.
I understand my Nipper has to undertake a pool proficiency to participate at the beach - what does this involve?
Due to the increasing involvement with ocean activities as nippers get older, the pool proficiency alters each year to accommodate the skill level needed. For more details please contact our Director of Junior Activities Group.
What do nippers have to wear at nippers?
It is a SLSNSW requirement that all nippers wear a fluro pink rash safety vest and a cap (either a club cap or a coloured cap) which helps identify them when in the water and on the beach. We also highly recommend sunscreen.
What happens after my Nipper reaches 14 years of age?
Once Nippers reach 14 years of age they participate in the Cadet program, where they undertake the Surf Rescue Certificate, further increasing their beach knowledge and skills.
